2015 – PEUGEOT 2008 HYBRID AIR

PEUGEOT 2008 Hybrid Air is a hybrid that unites in an innovative way a gasoline engine with a compressed air propulsion system, which can reach up to 34 km / l of fuel. Thanks to a smart control center, the 2008 Hybrid Air meets the driver’s commands in three different modes:• Air: active up to 70 km / h (only the energy contained in the air cylinder makes the vehicle move forward);

• Petrol (PureTech 1.2l three-cylinder engine, 82 hp);

• Combined: when the mechanism with compressed air contributes as boost in accelerations and resumes.The consumption of 34 km / l corresponds to a reduction of 45% of the fuel consumption in the city of a compact car compared to an equivalent gasoline engine. Emissions, in turn, are about 30% lower than those of a gasoline-like model. Depending on the topography and driving style of the driver, approximately 60% to 80% of the trip in urban routes can be driven in “Air” mode.ybrid Air technology is the Brand’s response to the need to meet global challenges in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants. In relation to other hybrid systems, the Hybrid Air’s main differential lies in the energy storage unit in the form of compressed air. Brakes and decelerations are used to recover energy and benefit from the “Air” mode.The advantages do not stop there: the vehicle does not need additional battery, like the conventional hybrids. This preserves the vehicle’s internal space (both for occupants and luggage) and contributes to reducing the emission of pollutants into the environment. Because it is essentially mechanical, the system has easier and more economical maintenance. Its components are made from recyclable materials and have small dimensions.The energy cylinder containing compressed air is arranged under the body in the central tunnel. Another low pressure reservoir is located at the height of the rear suspension cross member and serves as an expansion vessel. Finally, the hydraulic group consisting of an engine and a pump is installed under the hood in the transmission. The latter is composed of an automated epicyclic train to manage the distribution between the two energies. It replaces the mechanical gearbox and offers the possibility of automating the gearshift.

The combustion engine is a three-cylinder gasoline of last generation. It has the most modern technologies: optimization of weight and compactness through the greater possible integration of the components, reduction of the internal frictions through the use of a special coating, thermal management for a faster temperature increase, among others. OPERATING PRINCIPLEThe computer manages the two power sources – gasoline engine and compressed air reservoir – to achieve the best possible performance depending on driving conditions. The passage between the three modes available – “Air”, “Gasoline” and “Combined” – occurs completely independently of the driver.In “Air” mode, only the energy contained in the compressed air cylinder causes the vehicle to move forward. As it expands, the air occupies an increasing space in the energy reservoir and displaces a corresponding volume of oil. The oil is an energy vector that feeds the hydraulic motor coupled to the epicyclic train. With the engine running off, the vehicle travels without consuming gasoline or emitting CO2. This mode has its best expression in urban circulation.

In “Gasoline” mode, only the PureTech 1.2l three-cylinder petrol engine (82 hp) powers the vehicle. This propeller benefits from the latest technologies to obtain, compared to the previous generation, a reduced weight of 21 kg, friction reduced by 30% and with an evolved thermal management to achieve the optimum operating temperature more quickly. This mode is particularly adapted for roads, with speed stabilized.In the “Combined” mode, the petrol and hydraulic engines work together to move the vehicle, in adjusted proportions depending on the situation, in order to achieve optimal consumption. Flexible, the Hybrid Air can power the hydraulic motor from two sources. As long as the amount of energy contained in the compressed air tank is sufficient to meet the driver’s demand, the hydraulic motor runs from that source. Then, if necessary, it can be fed directly by the hydraulic pump. This mode is especially intended for transient phases in the city and on the road (uprooting and acceleration).The power supply can be recharged in two ways. In decelerations (when braking or taking off the accelerator foot), the reduction of speed is not obtained by applying the pads on the brake discs, but by the compressive resistance of the air in that accumulator.

The alternative is to recharge through the reconnection of the thermal engine – in this situation, a part of the energy produced by the gasoline is used to compress the air. In both cases, the maximum energy capacity of the accumulator under pressure is reached quickly, in just ten seconds.It is a world-class technology that is accessible to all and which already has important awards in Europe thanks to its low consumption and low environmental impact. From simple concept, this technology becomes very attractive for all the markets of the planet.2016 – PEUGEOT TRAVELER i-LABPeugeot will present at the Geneva Motor Show the new Traveler, its nevan. Accompanying the novelty will be an i-Lab version, which proposes an insight into the future of business travel. The version is essentially characterized by connectivity services. The four individual seats, arranged face to face, are positioned around a 32-inch touch screen. It is also equipped with a Wi-Fi hotspot, cloud access, Bluetooth, induction charging sources and a virtual reality helmet. The version also has specific decorations, especially leather seats and Alcantara. The engine is a 2.0 hp BlueHDI with 180 hp, coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission.
